Go For A Treble This Way
A treble is a wonderful bet - when it comes up - and the cost in stakes is a mere one point. But it takes lots of luck to win that way. There simply must be an allowance for error, and that brings us to a simple perm bet that any betting shop will accept. If we make a selection in each of five races and link them up in race order thus: 1-2-4, 1-3-5, 2-4-5. There must be a winning treble if four selections win, and, of course there are three chances of a winning treble in any case. When handing bets of this kind over the counter the horses must be written out in the conventional way.
Now this idea can be extended so that with four winners there must be two winning trebles plus five chances of one winning treble. In this case the races are linked 1-2-4, 1-3-5, 2-4-5, 1-3-4, 2-3-5. The first set-up is very cheap, and this allows the backer to work quite a neat system. For one set he may take tips from the betting forecasts (favourites), for another he may take selections from his favourite writer and for another he may take his horses from the form selections. Thus he could repeat the original three-treble bet and so push up his winning chances of one or more trebles.
In general we should allow for a margin of error in all our betting. One horse in a race is okay, but two are better, and are better still in big ante-post events. The simple suggestions above allow for errors, for they are always cropping up…
